If you are under 27, the cheapest ATM student travel pass Milan option is the discounted annual pass: roughly €200 for twelve months across the whole urban network, which works out at under €17 a month. A standard monthly pass costs around €39 and the full-price annual pass around €330. If you are staying for a full academic year, the under-27 annual pass pays for itself in less than two months of commuting.

Below you will find the current price ranges, the application steps, the income-based discounts and — most importantly — realistic travel times from each neighbourhood to the main campuses. In Milan, rent and metro minutes are two sides of the same decision.

Fares: single tickets versus passes

The urban ticket covers zones Mi1–Mi3, which include the entire city plus metro terminals such as Sesto and Cologno. For destinations outside the city, like Monza, you need an extended ticket.

Ticket / passApprox. priceNotes
Single ticket~€2.20Valid 90 minutes, one metro entry
Carnet of 10~€19.50Good for occasional use
Day ticket~€7.60Similar to the daily cap when paying contactless

Annual pass (standard)~€33012 months from the start date you choose
Annual pass, under 27~€200Age-based; no university enrolment needed

Fares are reviewed periodically, so always confirm the exact amount on the official ATM website or at a ticket office before paying.

When does a pass actually pay off?

Say you travel to campus five days a week, return trip. That is 10 rides, about €22 per week on single tickets. Over a teaching month you easily reach €85–€90, before any evenings out.

  • Monthly (~€39): worth it even if you only travel every other day. Break-even sits at roughly 18 rides a month.
  • Under-27 annual (~€200): the clear winner if you are staying at least six months. Even with three months away, the average stays below €20 a month.
  • Contactless or carnet: makes sense only during your first weeks, while you are still house hunting and do not know which neighbourhood you will end up in.

One detail that costs people money: the annual pass runs from the start date you select, not from the academic calendar. If you sign a lease in September but only fly in during October, set the start date for October.

How to apply, step by step

  1. Get the electronic card: passes are not sold on paper. You first need a personal travel card, requested online on the ATM website or at an ATM Point office.
  2. Prepare your documents: valid ID or passport, your codice fiscale (the Italian tax identification code, needed for almost every administrative step here) and a digital passport-style photo. For international students, the codice fiscale is the real starting point.
  3. Choose the right profile: if you have not turned 27 yet, select the age-based reduced profile. It depends on your date of birth, not on enrolment.
  4. Pay and load: you can pay online by card or at a counter. Monthly passes can be topped up in the ATM app, which saves you a queue.

ISEE discounts: who qualifies

Lower fares exist for people with a low ISEE (the official Italian indicator of household economic situation). Students whose family income is earned abroad can look into the ISEE parificato, issued through a CAF office — a tax assistance centre — using your family income documents. The process takes time, so start before term begins and confirm requirements and amounts with the CAF and official channels.

Why September is the worst time to improvise

Between late August and mid-October, the ATM Point offices at Duomo, Cadorna, Centrale and Loreto are among the busiest counters in the city. Practical fix: start the card request online as soon as you have your codice fiscale, and use a carnet or contactless payment in the meantime.

How long is your commute from each neighbourhood?

The times below are approximate and refer to time on the metro only, excluding waiting and walking.

A few fixed landmarks: Statale on via Festa del Perdono is served by Missori and Crocetta (M3) and by Duomo (M1/M3); the Brera Academy by Lanza (M2) and Montenapoleone (M3); Bicocca has its own stop on M5. The M4 line, running between Linate and San Cristoforo, has made east–west journeys noticeably easier, with interchanges at Sant-Ambrogio (M2) and San Babila (M1).

A useful rule while flat hunting: a room 30 minutes from campus but three minutes from a metro station is usually more liveable than one 20 minutes away that requires two changes. To cut commuting time, browse listings filtered by university — for example homes near Politecnico or homes near Bocconi.

Mistakes that lead to fines or wasted money

  • Not tapping on trams and buses: the metro has gates, but on surface transport you must tap your card on the reader yourself, even with an active pass.
  • Travelling without ID: passes are personal, and inspectors can ask for identification.
  • Buying the wrong zone: if you live outside the city boundary, Mi1–Mi3 is not enough. Check your zone first.
  • Waiting for an enrolment certificate: the under-27 fare is age-based, so there is no reason to postpone.
  • Missing the last train: the metro closes around midnight, with final departures close to 00:30. After that, night buses follow the metro routes.
